ToyCon PH 2017: More Than Just Toys

TOYCON is perhaps one of the longest running and biggest pop culture convention in the Philippines.

The Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention or TOYCON is a highly-anticipated annual event which celebrates the diversity of collecting as a hobby which is highlighted by the launch of upcoming blockbuster movies, the latest games and gadgets, awesome advances in animation, comics, anime and manga and the sensation of the latest releases in toys and collectibles.

The event does not disappoint if you’re looking forward to getting yourself something nice. With vendors that cover everything from action figures, collectibles, to comics every geek can find their vice. Or in most cases, find a new addiction or two! The local comic and toy shops were well represented, and there were tons of local artists selling their masterpieces.
There are several locally owned comic and toy shops that are prominently featured each year, and the owners are there to make friends and maybe a buck or two. Every year I am surprised to see the sheer volume of toys and figurines that are up for sale.

This year, there was even a tabletop/card game are setup to teach guests how to play the more popular games, all for free.

This year the Philippines very own superheroes takes center stage. The Mars Ravelo Komiks exhibit was superb and it is perhaps the single most visited part of the event. It showcased Filipino superhero characters in the most epic way along with memorabilia of some of his writing equipment and works.
I don’t know how they do it, but every year, more and more international celebrities are invited to these events. Headliners this year included Karen Fukuhara (Katana of the Suicide Squad), Lindsey Mckeon (Tessa the Reaper from the hit TV series, Supernatural), Charlie Bewley (The Vampire Dmitri, from the Twilight movie franchise), Kevin Mcnally (Gibbs from Pirates of tthe Carribean), Stefan Capicic (Colossus in the Deadpool Movie), Cas Anvar (the voice of Altair in Assassins Creed:Revelations), and Carla Perez (Rita Repulsa in the Power Rangers 90s TV Series)
There is one thing I wanted to add. Every year the show gets bigger, and it’s quickly approaching the point where it’s too big for the venue. Lines can be long, and if you go at the wrong time on, it’s going to feel extremely crowded.
All in all, the Toy Convention is a must see for any fan. Geek culture is very well represented at the con, and there is a ton to see and do. Even with the small complaints, you’re sure to have a good time. The staff and organizers deserve all the credit for putting on an amazing convention. I can’t wait to see what they’re able to put together next year.
