Finland's Nokia and Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi announced an agreement on Wednesday to cross-license patents from each other, which will help both companies develop new products.

Under the terms of the agreement, Nokia will be providing Xiaomi with network infrastructure. Both companies will also be working towards finding data transport and connections solutions; eventually looking into the area of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Both companies have agreed to "explore opportunities for further cooperation" in areas such as the internet of things, augmented and virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, according to a press release.

While things don’t sound as sexy in the signed cooperation deal, especially for most of us looking into a Nokia x Xiaomi smartphone love-child, the two companies could be working on something else on the down-low.
